Cruising To St. Maarten

TOP 15 HOT TIPS For Cruisers

st maarten cruise shipsAfter many years working with various aspects of cruise ships and passenger movements, we’ve established a list of the MOST valuable things you should know about your cruise to St Maarten –

  • 1. Credit Cards – make sure you tell your cerdit card company BEFORE you leave home that you will be taking a Caribbean cruise! It will avoid any embarrassments or lengthy phone calls from the country you’re in to verify your identity to the issuer. ALSO – always carry ID with you when you leave the ship – some businesses will not allow a transaction if you don’t carry it!
  • 2. Island Tours – For ultimate flexibility you may want to consider hiring a taxi at the port when you get off the ship. This is a great idea if you are a family of 4 – 10 people because you can get a large air-conditioned cruiser with a knowledgable driver who’ll take you exactly where you want to go, show you the sites, stop for photos or literally whatever you want, and at a GREAT PRICE compared to other tours: for $10 – $20 per head you can expect a great day out and they will make sure you avoid the traffic and get back on time!
  • 3. Nude Beaches – if you like them, there are plenty on the French side where the liberal European lifestyle reigns. Orient Beach is by far the most popular. (you can find a great deal about Orient Beach in our e-book). If you don’t like them or don’t want your kids to get an unexpected surprise, then make sure you ask your driver or excursion booker to tell you if Orient Beach is on the list of stops.
  • 4. Shopping in Marigot – if you have decided to go to the French side  (St. Martin) to do some shopping you had better time it right! They generally open a little later than the Dutch side (St Maarten) at 10am and then most stores take a ‘siesta’ or afternoon break for lunch between 1 – 3pm and close their stores. They re-open at 3pm until 6pm. It’s important to get the timing right because you will only have a few hours in port and you will have to be back on board by 4 – 5pm.
  • 5.  Economic Day Out – Want to see St. Maarten without spending a dime? Then consider the following:
  1. Have a big breakfast on-board the ship. Pack your towels, sunscreen, bottled water and sandwiches.
  2. Walk the 10 minutes to town instead of getting a taxi or water taxi ($5 a head)
  3. In the center of town you will find access to the boardwalk on Great Bay Beach where you can walk a further 5 mins to the western end where there is plenty of free space with no chairs and umbrellas requirements and you can lay out your towels and enjoy the beach for the day!
  4. If you want some great views to take photos from, then a further 10 minute walk along the western end of the beach towards the hillside where you can cut across the the road and walk up past Great Bay Hotel to a vantage point at the roadside perfect for taking panoramic shots of the whole bay AND your cruise ship!

OK, for a modest upgrade to just $10 dollars you can get 2 beach chairs, an umbrella, 2 FREE beers, a FREE water bed float, FREE wi-fi and a free local rum shot!
