St. Maarten St. Martin Best Beaches
So Which are The Best?
It takes years to know why some are better than others….
….and which ones are best at certain times of year and in certain conditions…but, we’ll give you the rundown on the best of the best for every occasion – be it wild and windy, fun, calm, romantic, chic or even completely naked!
As with restaurants, we obviously have OUR favorites – but, we want to speak to you impartially and give you what are considered by the majority as the best of the best – it’s really your vacation and your decision at the end of the day – an isn’t half the fun of a vacation discovering things for yourself?
Let’s do a ‘day in the life of a beach’….an IDEAL day. Ok, we assume the weather is great as always, with a beautiful north-easterly breeze….
6am – Let’s start at sunrise – a great beach to do a full hours’ walk is Orient Bay from end to end. At this time it is deserted and all the chairs and umbrellas are still packed away. One caution – if you are squeamish about naked bodies then avoid this hour! iF you’re on the Dutch side, Simpson Bay beach is also a nice long stroll.
9am – Breakfast – this is not a big thing on beaches on the Dutch side or the French side, but there are a few little hideaways close to beaches you may want to try out after your morning walk – Paradise View at the top of the hill overlooking the panoramic vista of Orient Bay and Le Galion, is open from 7am and serves traditional breakfasts. Sunset Cafe at Grand Case Beach Club has great croissants and espresso. Le Sucriere or Le Sarafina on the waterfront in Marigot. Finally Le Sucriere or Zee Best in Simpson Bay.
10am – 12pm – Watersports – Again, Orient Bay – but also Great Bay has great watersports on offer including diving or the 12 meter regatta.
12pm – 2pm – Lunch – Depending on your taste, and budget, you may want to opt for the more upmarket Palm Beach or Waikiki on Orient Bay or the rustic ‘Pedro’s at the other end of Orient Beach. Two of my personal favorites are Karakter Beach bar in Simpson Bay or a simple beach cafe at Mullet Bay.
2pm – 5pm – SUN! – Obviously this is the best time to catch the rays and top up the tan – it’s also the hottest part of the day so we choose to go to beaches that are north-east facing and have a good breeze – again Orient Bay – and also Le Galion, Guana Bay (deserted!) and Simpson Bay beach.
5pm+ – Sunset! – If you want a quiet, romantic sunset then try Calmos cafe in Grand Case. If you’re wanting a little excitement then hang out at Sunset Beach Bar at the end of the airport runway! – there’s a reason this was voted 3rd best beach bar IN THE WORLD!
Late – a must do for any vacationer in St. Maarten/ St. Martin is a full moon party and there really is nowhere else to compete with this but Friars’ Bay – they’ve been perfecting the art of bonfire and party on the beach under the moon for years.
