Butterfly Farm St. Martin Activities

St Martin Butterfly Farm – A Great Tropical Adventure.

st martin butterfly farmEvery year, some 30,000 visitors pass through the enchanted pathways of St Martin’s Butterfly Farm – one of the island’s most popular attractions. Here you can walk through lush tropical gardens amongst hundreds of free flying exotic butterflies from all around the world.

Entertaining guides will show all stages of the butterflies’ life cycle from tiny egg, to hungry caterpillar to jewel-like pupa. However much you thought you knew beforehand, be prepared to double it. As for young children, they’re frequently left with mouths gaping. You’ll learn how to handle the butterflies with care or caterpillars if you dare.

A word of warning, however! There is a hidden agenda. During the course of your visit, the butterflies’ magic may weave a spell, you may begin to remember a time when we had respect for nature, a time when nature was part of us. You may remember when you were young and butterflies were everywhere.

Over the decades, butterflies’ natural habitats have slowly but steadily been destroyed. You can help reverse this. The owners and staff at the farm have a secret mission… not to let butterflies become a memory. They want to inspire you to go home with a burning desire to re-create the butterflies’ habitat in your own back yard. One seed can change the world and they want you to plant it! In short, they want to inspire you to become a butterfly farmer!

All it takes is a collection of plants that produce copious amounts of nectar, and an all-important host plant. While butterflies will more or less pull out their proboscis at any joint serving warm nectar, the females are very picky when it comes to laying their eggs, and usually will consider one particular plant only. In St Martin in October, you’ll notice thousands of butterflies fluttering around the wild sage; the beautiful Monarchs go crazy for Milkweed. This is where you come in. Milkweed has been disappearing at an alarming rate in the US, which explains the drop in the once-ubiquitous Monarchs.

Flutter over to the Butterfly Farm website for information about setting up your own farm, what plants to grow and where to put them. On the website, you’ll also find galleries of stunning photos.

The Butterfly Farm is always a great day out for the family, however many times you visit. In the gift shop there is a huge selection of butterfly gifts and souvenirs and outside there is a shady café where you can sip cold drinks and watch the sugar birds and humming birds sip theirs!

Open 7 days a week 9am last tour starts 3pm.
