Princess Juliana International Airport or SXM

Gateway to the NorthEastern Caribbean

Named after Dutch Royalty, Princess Juliana International Airport should really be ‘St. Maarten & St. Martin airport’ as it serves both sides of the island and has Dutch and French international carriers KLM and Air France serving from ‘mainland’ Europe.

The French side has it’s own smaller airport serving regional French territories, but it is not big enough to accommodate the larger transatlantic jets like Boeing 747’s or 737’s……

PJIA was recently upgraded from a ramshackle grouping of zinc-roofed buildings to a modern $87M fully-functioning international standard airport complete with jet-bridges, duty-free shopping arcade and spacious lounges.

For those of us who’ve lived on the island for many years, there’s a common reminiscence about the ‘old days’ when you could sit in the airport restaurant on the roof and watch the planes land and take off. It was a favorite of locals for business meetings and social get together before greeting or seeing off friends. It was officially outside of immigration so you could come and go whenever you wanted without have to be flying.

If there is sufficient interest from enthusiasts, we can get access to some old photographs and documents and post them here for your enjoyment. You feedback is welcome.
