St. Maarten Cocktail-a-Clock

Cocktail o’clock

Even a non-drinker’s vacation would not be complete without an exotic island cocktail….or three.

st maarten cocktails on the beachOur St. Maarten island’s talented mixologists are on a par with our award-winning chefs so with or without alcohol, there’s a beverage to suit every thirst. Whether it’s the all-enduring Pina Colada, a traditional Guavaberry concoction, Ti Punch, a Rum Jumbie surprise or a straight up Martini, you can kick back with your feet in the sand watching a glorious St. Maarten beach sunset with the colors of the rainbow in your hand and on your tongue!

Nearly every bar and restaurant has their own specialty but here are a few of our local favorite spots for cocktail o’clock……

With the sun setting in the West, head out to Maho and Cupecoy for a perfect sundowner. Bliss has a well-stocked, stylish bar with a great view of the planes coming into land – a great place to relax before the night owls arrive.

In Maho itself, many of the restaurants have dedicated cocktail lounges – Bamboo Bernies and Sopranos are both tranquil spots to get the evening underway. Temptation and Rare at Atlantis World are renowned for their cocktails, as well as their fine dining.

The former’s mixologist, Paul Petersen, is an award-winning shaker whose ‘St Maartini’ was previously voted king of the Caribbean cocktails. If you want to see how a cocktail should be chosen, mixed and served, this is your spot.

For an extra dash of elegance, the lounge at La Samanna is worth the trip. Take a rum punch or G&T poolside or enjoy it with some snacks inside. Exclusively romantic and a masterclass in presentation, La Samanna’s cocktail lounge is the equal of the excellent restaurant next door in bathing you in luxury.

In Simpson Bay, it’s always Happy Hour, but don’t miss the venues that take it to another level. The Red Piano in Pelican has a cozy lounge with some top live entertainment, while Pineapple Pete’s is famous for its intimidating birthday bowl – the best Mojito you’ll taste.

Jimbo’s in Simpson Bay Yacht Club knocks out frozen Margaritas in generous sizes, limbering up customers for some spicy Mexican cuisine, garnished with an impeccable selection of Rock and Blues tunes.

The new 3 Palms lounge is also a stylish bar with a metropolitan feel and beautiful views over the lagoon from the terrace.

And who says cocktails have to be loaded with alcohol? Head to Top Carrot at Plaza del Lago for an entirely moral juice blend which will repair any rough edges from the night before. The beet, carrot and celery combinations will launch you zestily into the day ahead.

st maarten sunset momentThe French side is where they take their rum seriously, dating back to the days when it was cheaper than fresh water. Don’t leave the island until you’ve sampled an authentic punch – cane sugar, a twist of lime and a warming swirl of dark rum. Try the lounge at the Beach Plaza Hotel, La Vie en Rose on the Marigot waterfront, or any of the restaurants on Grand Case’s restaurant row. For a special location, it’s also worth heading up to Loterie Farm where the Tree Lounge has live DJs, tapas and the all important mixes.

On the East Coast, Rancho del Sol perched on top of  hill overlooking Orient Bay is a great place for early evening cocktails after a tough day at the beach……..and if you’re still on the beach, ‘Palm Beach’ has a sophisticated, cultured ambience. (you’ll find it farther down Orient Beach toward the western end – see our map section for details and our e-book for special offers).

Orient Bay, too, has more options than should seriously be tackled in one evening. Bikini Beach Bar does a mean Margarita, while the Pastis flows nightly in Orient Bay Village as the gentlemen get their boules out.

A cocktail at sunset is part of the Caribbean canvas. Fortunately, there is no shortage of renowned artists providing ways to enjoy a tall drink that hits the spot.
