St. Maarten Nearby Islands – St Kitts & Nevis

The Sister Isles – St. Kitts & Nevis

A world away from the flat beauty of Anguilla, the sister islands of St Kitts and Nevis welcome you with the splendor of their volcanic mountains, tropical rainforest and historical riches beyond compare.

Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493, he decided to name the country after himself, though St Christopher has over the years been shortened to the ‘fond’ name St Kitts. Separated by just 3 miles (an easy 20 minute journey on the Sea Bridge ferry service), St Kitts and Nevis together offer a wonderful option for a weekend away from St Maarten with a 30-45 minute journey from Princess Juliana Airport.

Populated with sugar cane fields around the 68 square mile volcanic island, St Kitts once boasted a thriving sugar trade that was the mainstay of the economy for over 300 years. However the country was forced to close the no longer lucrative sugar industry as recently as 2005 making way for a new, yet already thriving business in tourism.

Testament to St Kitts and Nevis’ fascinating history can be seen all over both islands. The old plantation estates and sugar cane mills with their impressive chimneys pointing to the sky, the quaint British design of the ‘Circus’, the central point of the capital Basseterre. Note the French name – St Kitts was once shared by the British and French! Brimstone Hill National Park Fortress known as the Gibraltar of the West Indies is another must see in St Kitts – an amazing feat of engineering and bursting with historical information about the island.

First time visitors will be awed by the majestic nature flourishing in these islands. Take a hike through the rainforest with one of St Kitts experienced guides and admire the lush vegetation on your way up to the peak of Mount Liamuiga. Standing at 3,792 feet, this adventure is not for the faint hearted but the views at the summit are incredible!

Compared to St Maarten/St Martin, St Kitts and Nevis are very quiet making them perfect spots to get away from it all. However, there is no shortage of activities – including fabulous golf courses on both islands – and there are plenty of fine restaurants and great shopping. More recently St Kitts is becoming the island on which to own a piece of paradise with its exclusive real estate developments
