St Barths

St Barths (St Barts) – Playground of The Rich and Famous

Right next door to St Maarten- in fact I’m looking at it right now as I write this……..

Close enough to see the rooftops through a zoom lens, but far enough to be a completely different world, St Barths is recognized by the wealthy, famous and ‘wannabe’ wealthy and famous types, as the playground of the Caribbean.

St Bart’s is a quaint and chic little French island with a lot of charm, bags of street cred and prices to match.

For an excellent video of planes landing and taking off at the tiny airport (voted “#3 most dangerous in the world” by the Hostory Channel) CLICK HERE

Year-round it is fairly quiet and serene, but during a few months of the high season (Nov. – March) St Barths is usually fully booked, with the premium 2 weeks over Christmas and New Year completely sold out at premium prices.

You can expect to watch the traditional Gustavia fireworks display alongside Leonardo DiCaprio or Robert De Niro (assuming you have a million dollar yacht to park next to them, of course!)

I usually hop over to St Barths on the high-speed ferry (see Aquamania for ‘The Edge’ linkcat) a couple of times a year – in April, when the season sales are on at the best shops – and in October, just before the season starts and prices are still low.

Us islanders have to get off our ‘own’ rock every so often to avoid the eponymous ‘small island disease’ – a kind of stir-crazy feeling that builds up over several weeks and can, if left unchecked and remedied with a boat trip or flight, lead to a sort of ‘mania’ or latent madness expressing itself in a nervous twitch or an ability to down several bottles of beer before breakfast.

There is a great article in our e-book as well as extensive info on how to get to St Barts and the best places to visit or stay.

If you are going on a cruise, it is unlikely you will stop over in St Barths as they can only accommodate smaller ships. Some would say the French….erm…’snobbyness’ prevents the ‘masses’ from landing on their shores, but I think it’s more to do with practicality and the small infrastructure – the people are actually very nice! Well, wouldn’t you be if you lived there? (and made your years’ takings at your boutique from  a Russian Oligarch and a movie star in just two weeks of the year?).

However, you will probably get to sail close enough to take some pictures. And if your zoom lens is strong enough, and you’re on a New Year cruise, you may even be able to see into the master suite of a mega-yacht carrying someone famous…..
