If you’re a nature lover then you’ll LOVE St. Maarten – St. Martin
We even have a magazine called ‘Nature’ because it is such a big area of interest on it’s own.
We have nature foundations, natural reserves, protected reefs and the Pride Foundation which helps educate and inform the local population about areas of natural concern including biodiversity, hygiene, natural preservation and general beautification (believe me – if you put up an ugly sign they’ll come after you!!).
There is even a concerted effort to move towards improved garbage disposal, recycling and alternative sources of energy – lot’s of sun and wind here!
We even have our own resident archaeologist!
The rugged and diverse geography lends itself perfectly to nature activities – whether it’s mountain climbing, camping, hiking or beach walking – you’ll find it all here in St Martin SXM!
Here are just a few of the natural wonders you can enjoy in St. Maarten -
- Beaches (obviously!)
- Hiking trails
- Wild and windy scenic areas
- Jungle hiking and zip-lining!
- Open waters & deserted islands
- Butterfly farm
- Horse riding
- Diving and snorkeling
- Beaches ‘au naturel’ (naturist or nude beaches)
My aunt and uncle came to visit a few years ago and thought they were in for a beach holiday and, being nature lovers, were not really impressed with the idea of lying on the beach all day and were really just coming to see us and their new-born great neice. Anyway, they were pleasantly surprised how much there was to do outdoors beyond the beaches so when they went back home they were fitter, happier and a few pounds lighter – and of course they had a tan as well!
If you’re a serious nature lover we can you how you can personally get involved in nature preservation and the various foundations here on the island. (we may even tell you where and when the great leatherback turtles hatch! – maybe….it’s not something everyone should know!!).
Spend the day diving in and out of the cool clear aquamarine waters of the Caribbean undisturbed by tourists?
Do you want to snorkel amongst the variety of fish on the coral reefs and then BBQ on a deserted beach?
If so, you can do this for a surprisingly low cost with a fabulous discount offer only available in our discount book!
Swimming With Horses
You can’t get closer to nature than when you’re riding bareback on a horse in the cool Caribbean waters.
Seaside Nature Park in Cay Bay has alot to offer to the outdoor types with nature trails open for hiking or horse-riding. There is also the possibility to explore the rocky coastline and the variety of flora and fauna. They also have a small ‘back-to-basics’ waterfront bar and grill where you can watch the sunset and relax.
We like to go here with the kids to get away from people, concrete and houses!…..truly a natural spot!

The Butterfly Farm
Imagine walking through a lush tropical rain forest amidst flowers and trees, ponds and a trickling waterfall with butterflies flying overhead and all around you in their own natural paradise. This is a dream come true at The Butterfly Farms in St Martin and Aruba.
Within large meshed enclosures you can see hundreds of real exotic butterflies flying freely, with dozens of the most spectacular species from all over the world. You can also witness all stages of their life cycle from tiny egg to curious caterpillar and jewel like pupa. Early in the morning is the best opportunity to see a butterfly emerging from its pupa and watch newborn butterflies take their first flight! If you want to handle the butterflies and caterpillars our guides will be happy to show you how to do so without damaging these fragile creatures.
