Best Things To Do In St Maarten
Great article from US News about the best things to do in St Maarten – St Martin along with world rankings under various categories.
We would, in our humble opinion, agree with some but not all of the things on their list – it’s obvious to us they haven’t got an ‘insider’s’ edge like we have and have missed a few not-so-obvious attractions like particular restaurants or the many scenic and secret photo spots and beautiful lookouts that you won’t find in any online guide or website – EXCEPT perhaps our own insider’s guide – St Maarten Island Guide.
DID YOU KNOW?
St Maarten is ranked….
#2 in ‘Best Winter Vacations’
#3 in ‘Best Caribbean Honeymoons’
#5 in ‘Best Caribbean Vacations’
#5 in ‘Best Islands in the World’
US News Travel Section has a survey of all the islands ranked in ‘Best’ categories where you too can vote for the island you love the most or you think should NOT be on the list – check it out HERE.
Chic sophistication on St Martin’s most popular beach
A personal favorite of ours, Palm Beach at Orient Bay is at once relaxing, chic, sophisticated and ‘cool’!
If you want to get away from the noise and people pollution of the ‘Big Five’ restaurants or ‘Lo-lo’s’ of Orient beach on the Eastern end, then get yourself over to the western end!
Although ‘Waikiki’ restaurant is one of the more popular hang outs on Orient Bay, it’s a little too pretentious and unnecessarily pricey for our tastes – it’s a socialites favorite and a place to ‘see and be seen’ much akin to Nikki Beach (and Waikiki is definitely trying to fashion it’s own brand based on Nikki’s worldwide success!).
Take all of the great food Waikiki has, lower the prices, turn the volume down, get rid of the table dancers and space out the sun chairs and then you have Palm Beach.
WARNING: If you go to Palm Beach on Sunday be prepared to meet half of St Martin! It’s their spot on a Sunday especially……
Tip: Don’t turn off on the usual entrance to Orient Bay – it’s the one by the Cisco gas station and Paintball.

Bikini Beach St Martin
Meet ‘Bubbles’ Corrina Colada! – Orient Beaches’ Queen of Shakes.
One of our favorite little spots in St Maarten – St Martin has to be the quintessentially beach bar-esque Bikini Beach Bar on the famed Orient beach strip in the French side of the island.
Buddha statues, the ‘Noodle-kini’ noodle bar and a beach bar menu sprinkled with Asian delights make this beach bar a little different. Continue reading
St Martin – Le Galion Beach
Versatile & Unspoiled – Le Galion Beach Has Everything.
Le Galion beach has just about all the features you could expect from many beaches rolled into one – it’s calm at one end, but it’s rough enough to surf further out.
It’s breezy in places, calm in others,
There are watersports available, but you won’t hear the loud buzz of jet-skis because they are banned from this natural reserve.
it is unspoiled and uncommercialised, but you can get beach chairs & umbrellas and some great food ‘Chez Pat’ (Tropical Wave beach bar – the only one on the mile long stretch).
It’s perfect for teaching young children to swim at the north end because there are literally NO waves and it is very shallow – you can walk out quite a distance.
You can snorkel, wind-surf, paddle, kayak, surf, kite-surf or just float in the calm blue waters undisturbed……
Your host Pat & Tracy have kept this beach clean, rustic, simple and uncluttered for 30 years – to many, especially us locals, this is what a Caribbean beach is all about.

Best Beach St Martin?
Everyone Agrees Orient Beach.
St Maarten / St Martin, in either it’s Dutch or French spelling, is renowned for it’s plentiful 37 beaches crammed into just 37 square miles, but the ‘jewel’ in the crown of St Maarten/ St Martin beaches, and known throughout the world, is Orient Beach.
Known as much for ‘clothing optional’ as it is for it’s gourmet cuisine and watersports, Orient beach has enough for everyone and with over 2km of golden sands there is more than enough to go around!
Orient beach is just as popular with residents as it is with hotel, timeshare or the behemoth cruise ships that dock in Philipsburg (Dutch side – only 15 minutes drive!). Here’s why:
Sunrise, with hardly a soul on the beach, St Martin residents are out walking their dogs, taking a morning stroll or exercising whilst (predominantly) American tourists are doing their morning nude walk. The beach is large and expansive and with no beach chairs or umbrellas yet assembled in their military rows, there is little to hinder a sprinter or a sloucher except the tractor ‘beach-scraper’ cleaning up the seaweed and ‘combing’ the sand.
Shortly after 9am the first sun-bathers arrive soon followed by tourist from the cruise ship arrivals who have pre-booked reservations with restaurants and beach bars and rapidly take up the neat rows of chairs and umbrellas. There is more than enough room to enable the quiet-seeker to have no problem finding deserted parts of Orient Beach. Continue reading
Finding A Deserted Beach
It’s Not Too Hard When You Know How..
We’ve assembled a list of the best beaches for peace and tranquility – the kind of beach where you don’t want:

- The screaming and crying of children
- The harassment of souvenir hawkers
- The roar of a jet-plane overhead
- The doubt about your safety – is it too isolated?
There are many beaches in St. Maarten where you can have the best of both worlds – where at one end you can have fun and watersports and at the other be quiet and calm….. Continue reading
