St Maarten Nightlife – Orient Bay, St Martin

St Maarten Nightlife – Orient Bay, St Martin

We’ve held back showcasing this little gem because, well, selfishly we didn’t want it to get too popular!

Once a French side locals’ hangout, ‘Le Village’ is now becoming known with visitors as well and the atmosphere on a friday night is cool, relaxed, sophisticated and very friendly.

Watch this short video and see for yourself.

Ernest & Fidel – Porto Cupecoy, St Maarten

St Maarten Ernest & Fidel Cafe Porto Cupecoy

Why is the name of the Cafe

Ernest & Fidel?

The idea is not to laud dictators. The idea is to embrace the freedom of thought and ideas.

Freedom is the absence of constraint in choice or action; the liberation from the power of another; the quality of being frank, open, or outspoken; having boldness of conception or execution.

Freedom is the ability to be provocative or audacious without the fear of reprisal. What could be more provocative or audacious than throwing together one of the world’s most ruthless dictators and one of its most brilliant and beloved authors?

Ernest & Fidel - Porto Cupecoy, St. MaartenIf Ernest had been born in Fidel’s Cuba, his imagination would have been squelched. If Fidel had been born in the United States he may have taken the meaning of his name to heart and become a man of the cloth. If these two extraordinary men had become friends in Cuba what would have resulted – would Cuba have become a hot bed of free thinking and creativity rather than a country associated with oppression? Would there have been a coffee shop like this in heart of Havana? Continue reading

St. Maarten Local Food Soursop

St. Maarten Local Food Soursop

Yummy

Here is one of the  St. Maarten Island local food secrets…Also known as Graviola, Guanabana or Corossol, the smooth, shiny leaves are boiled in a tea to make a calming sedative that’s good for insomnia and is said to fight fever. The leaves are even placed inside pillows to induce sleep. The bulbous fruit, with its soft spikes, is made into a milky juice with a taste between strawberry and banana. Health benefits? It tastes good, which makes you happy!

It is sold in most supermarkets and roadside stalls as well as ‘juice guys’ selling it.

NATURAL NOURISHMENT

How eating foods appropriate for the climate and environment can really help your system energize, recuperate and restore…

While a few weeks in the Caribbean and St. Maarten especially, does wonders for the suntan and spirit, the island’s hidden natural resources can give the body a boost, too. Spearheaded by a group of local Rastafarian farmers, a resurgent agricultural wave is aiming to revive knowledge in local ‘bush’ remedies, and decrease local dependence on imported produce. Our brief look at which tree or plant cures what ailment represents a scintilla of what any West Indian Grandmother can tell you…

St. Maarten Island Restaurants

Wine & Dine

Restaurants – one of my favorite categories! Having lived here for over 13 years I’ve been fortunate enough to sample most of the eating establishments on the island – large and small. We also, through our work, have been able to enjoy the best on offer – including private preview dinners of the gourmet St Maarten culinary competition which has the best chefs in town showing off their latest creations.

NO LIMITS!

St Martin Dining ExperiencesSt Maarten/ St Martin’s dining landscape is as rich as ever. The old names are still there – L’Escargot, Antoine, Chesterfields, Mario’s – places whose reputation precedes them. Other favorites have enjoyed a shuffle within the past couple of years, you’ll now find another Greenhouse in Simpson Bay, a new Topper’s by the Sea, Bamboo Bernies in Maho, and some little-known favorites like Calmos Café or Sol E luna in French Cul-De Sac (not easy to find unless you’ve been personally taken there – I think there’s a reason they don’t advertise!).
