#1 Bamboo Bernies - Asian Seafood and Sushi
Owned and operated by a wealthy New York Restauranteur and businessman (Jimmy Goldman), this Japanese style sushi restaurant is packed every night and would not be out of place in the bustling streets of mid-town Manhattan. The menu is classically Asian sushi and fish dishes but don’t worry – it has a Caribbean ‘twist’.
The ‘Buddha Lounge’ is one of the few hip places in St Maarten you can talk and hear each other. Reliable, consistent and very popular with locals and tourists alike. Great as a late night stop before hitting the casino or nightclub.
#2 Lay-La’s – French-Caribbean
This laid-back beach restaurant is right up there for class and style with it’s intrinsically French ambiance, but what we like most is that you can dine in style, but with your toes in the sand.
A cool breeze and a fabulous view towards Marigot complete the picture. Lay-Las’ is what people imagine a Caribbean restaurant would be like from romantic movies where the hero drives his gal in an open topped cruiser to a secluded and discreet beach restaurant to down a bottle of Rose and sample great French-Caribbean food.
#3 Pineapple Pete’s – American-Caribbean
Pierre is a Canadian restauranteur who runs his restaurant with military precision, and yet manages to hold an atmosphere of joviality, camaraderie and friendship. This is probably one of the most popular restaurants on the Dutch side for many reasons.
It is family friendly, the food is consistent & tasty, it is inexpensive and ‘cheerful’, the waiting staff are friendly, efficient and courteous (like ‘Houstons’) and they have great live music most nights of the week. There is also a pool room and a sports bar at the lagoon side.
Most people who stay in the Simpson Bay/ Maho area will at some stage be drawn to Pineapple Pete’s which is in the heart of all the action right across from the cinema. It’s relatively cheap and, above all, consistent – you know exactly what you’re getting and how long it will take.
For this reason it is also popular with locals who don’t want to spend a fortune and wait a long time, and are on their way somewhere else for the evening.
Great family place.
#4 Sol E Luna – French
We chose Sol E Luna because it is one of those ‘secret’ intimate places that very few people know about – except those ‘in the know’!
Located in French Cul-De Sac quite a long way from anywhere, it is far enough away to be an adventure in itself, and close enough to be back to the hotel within 30 minutes wherever you are staying.
The owner has obviously put many years of inspired passion into the decor, the furnishings and choice of music as well as the food. It is brimming with tasteful objet d’art, paintings and lush tropical surroundings. The food is very French but simple and not over-stated.
Whilst the prices are reasonable for what you get, some would consider it a little on the high side. But, by the time you have finished an evening there, you really feel you’ve been somewhere special that is known about by only the most ‘in-the-know’ people.
#5 Temptation & Rare – International
Consistent award -winners, this pair of side-by-side restaurants in Cupecoy next to Atlantis Casino, is run by local-grown celebrity chef ‘Dino’ who trained at some of the finest establishments in the US. Temptation is world fusion cuisine and Rare is a steak house.
At Temptation he has inventive recipes that make you go ‘wow, that’s different’, and if you love wine he has an excellent world wine selection. There are not many places you can find a Stags Leap or Cakebread alongside an Australian Wolf Blass or Chilian Maipu.
If you’re in to good quality beef then this is the place. You may even be lucky enough to find Kobe beef on the menu that night.
Best thing about this place is you can choose from either menu and they will bring the food through to you from next door! Pick your ambience and the food will follow!
